Introduction

Kuvempu University (A State-sponsored University) was established in the year 1987 by an Act of Karnataka State Legislature through an Amendment No.28/1976 dated 29th January 1989 under the Karnataka State Universities Act 1.976. The University is recognised by UGC and it is also a member of the Association of Indian Universities.

Jnana Sahyadri, the main Campus of Kuvempu University, is located at Shankaraghatta at a distance of 28 kms from Shimoga town, the district head-quarters. The campus is only 2 kms from the magnificent Bhadra Reservoir. The main buildings of the University have been constructed on a small hillock, thus blending naturally with the landscape. The campus sprawls over an area of 230 acres.

Directorate of Distance Education

Offering higher education through Distance Education is an important step taken by Kuvempu University in order to help student community in their zeal for pursuing higher studies. Within a short time, the Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) of KU has earned a reputation across the country for systematic & timely delivery of need-based courses to students. The University believes that Distance Education is an equally good avenue to be made available to interested students. The degrees offered by the Directorate of Distance Education are equivalent to that of regular degree, Kuvempu University introduced Distance Education Programmes from the academic year 2002. The Directorate of Distance Education (DDE) is now offering more than 50 courses in various faculties at the UG, PG and PG-Diploma levels.

Fully Computerised Examination Branch

The examination branch of the University is totally computerized. The following is an extract from the comments of the NAAC Committee about the examination system at KU: "The University, in its attempt to modernise its functioning, has computerized the examination system and trained its employees in computer application. The innovations like use of photographs, lamination and hologram in the marks cards, etc, are commendable practices which can be emulated by other Universities".

Programme Delivery

A multi-form of instruction has been adopted, comprising of:

a) Study Material: Study material for all subjects which
ate supplied in the form of printed books.

b) Counseling Sessions: Will be held at Study Centres to
suit the convenience of the students.

c) Practical Sessions: Will also be held at the Study Centres. A set of Practical Assignments are given to students through the Study Centres.

d) Theory Assignments: For assessment, evaluation and for feed-back on comprehension of study material. A set of two Official Assignments for each subject is given to students through the Study Centres.

e) Project Work: To enable the student to gain an insight
to independent working on a practical project.

Credit System

The University follows the 'Credit System' for its UG & PG programmes in Information Technology. Each Credit entails approximately 30 hours of study comprising of all activities. Thus, a 3-Credit course involves 90 study hours. This helps the student to understand the academic effort he/she has to put in suitably to complete the course.

For each semester, Grade System as given in the table below is adopted for declaration of results.
